A Marine at Rest

Yesterday I had the privilege of being present at a funeral of a former Marine...
This Marine was the grandfather of one of my oldest, dearest friends...

Listening to his life sketch you knew this was a man who was loved and knew how to love back...
Sharing his passions with his son and his grandchildren...

We then moved on to the graveside service.

He served in the Pacific during WWII

It was my first military funeral and I found myself tearing up as I was taking pictures for the family...
It was moving...

I can't stop it...

This weekend is my 25th Alumni...
It's exciting and depressing all at the same time...

I'm really feeling older lately...
aches and pains...

Reunions are just a reminder of how quickly time passes us by
and there is nothing we can do to stop it...

High school reunions are the worst!
All those reminders of how energetic and full of life you were then
not to mention skinny!

I notice more often the old ladies as I briskly walk by them I wonder...
I wonder what they were like when they were young...
I wonder that I will be there some day...

I so don't want to get there

I'm preaching this week at my church and its freaking me out a bit...
It will be by far the biggest venue I've ever spoken at and with it being my "home" church
there is an added pressure...
I live with these people...

I will also be attempting to play basketball Saturday night...
It is a long standing tradition at CAA that the Saturday night of alumni there are basketball games...
I've participated in these games for years..
Each year it gets harder to run up and down that darn court...
the court I used to rule in high school....

So today in preparation for the weekend I'm gonna color my hair...
Because that's the one thing in my aging body that I can fix...
At least temporarily...

Sacred Valley a year ago...

So one year ago today I had my favorite day in Peru
Mom and I, along with three others, hired a guide and driver for the day.
Our plan was to go to the Sacred Valley and explore Inca ruins and visit towns along the way...
It was a day full of exploring and learning...

These cute guys are food to the Peruvians...
They have them in cages right by the back door so they can pick out the "fatted Guinea for dinner"
I guess it takes several days to prep them.
They are very tough and flavorless so the spend a few days stuffed with seasoning before they eat them...
Not the first time I've been glad to be a vegetarian!

Our first stop along the way was in the town of Chinchero
We were there early, before 8 and we were the only ones walking around...
We saw a demonstration by the local people of how the Inca's had made the bright colors for their clothing...(squished bugs make the red...)

The day dawned cool and cloudy.
Our guide kept telling us that the Ande Mountains were just behind the clouds...
I was worried we wouldn't get to see them...

Several times on the trip I was struck by how overwhelmingly wealthy I am compared to these people...
How very easy my life is compared to them...
How I take plumbing, clean water, electricity and a car for granted...
I kept thinking "I'm like Oprah wealthy compared to these people"
It was humbling....

Here I'm in Moray with it's impressive terracing...
It's a very deep pit and you can't help but want to climb all the way down...
You do think about it because of the elevation it makes climbing out so much harder...
I was dying!

The Salinas salt pits
My favorite picture of my Mom.

Ollaytatambo
My favorite place!
We could climb all over the mountainside looking at ruins
We climbed 250 steps up, gasping for breath every step of the way!
It was gorgeous and some what Macchu Pichu like
It would be as close as I would get to MP...

I'm pointing in the direction of Macchu Pichu...
They opened to the public the day after we flew home
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hanging out at Ollaytatambo

I was so thankful that the clouds burned off and we had amazing views of the Andes as we drove through the Sacred Valley on our way back to Cuzco!

It was an amazing day!

That evening when we got back to Cuzco the place was crazy!
We were there the week before Easter so there had been all kinds of processions and festivals...
But I'll save that story for another time...

Thanks for checking in!
I appreciate it!

Spring Break 2011

Last week was Spring Break...
Hard to believe, it really seems like we just had Christmas Break...
In terms of school it's all downhill from here...

Monday we had a down day...

Tue we went up to Meadows and had an awesome day skiing!
I did have a big crash first time all season, ouch!

Wed we packed up and headed to the beach...
We rented a house with our buddies the Thompsons in Yachats.

I've decided Yachats is my favorite beach on the Oregon Coast.
I love the combination of tide pools, blow holes, and sandy beaches

The town of Yachats is adorable too!
My friend Suzanne tipped us off to a great coffee shop and they had the best Chai!
The best part is that it was within walking distance of our new home!

We had fun exploring the area...
There are lighthouses, sand dunes to jump off and ice cream to eat in nearby Florence

Lighthouses...

But what I loved best were the blow holes...
Such power!
The ocean makes you feel very small!

Miss Teddy joined us for the trip.  She had fun too!
We had fun! I love the beach!
